Measurement System Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

The GPR measuring system is operated simultaneously with all other measuring systems in order to determine the layer structure of the road surface. This measuring system enables non-destructive characterization of the pavement and subgrade at relatively high speeds using high-frequency electromagnetic waves. In the Pavement Scanner, the method is used after the Georadar pulse system (2 GHz horn antenna) to determine the number and thickness of layers present in the pavement as well as to detect inhomogeneities.

The layer thickness information allows a physically based interpretation in connection with the TSD bearing capacity characteristic values. In contrast to the substance characteristic (of the surface), the 'inner' substance characteristics of the road structure that can be derived via TSD and GPR information are considerably more meaningful and reliable.
